A Travel Guide to the Colosseum of El Jem (2026)

The Amphitheatre of El Jem (also known as El Djem Colosseum) is one of the most impressive Roman ruins outside Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. Built in the early 3rd century AD, it is the largest amphitheatre in North Africa and the third-largest Roman amphitheatre ever constructed (after Rome’s Colosseum and the one in Capua).

Remarkably well-preserved, it could seat up to 35,000 spectators for gladiator fights, animal hunts, and public spectacles. Today, it stands dramatically in the middle of the small modern town of El Jem, offering visitors an atmospheric, less-crowded alternative to Rome’s famous Colosseum.

Why Visit El Jem Amphitheatre?

One of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world — you can freely explore the arena, underground passages (hypogeum), and multiple levels of seating.

Far fewer tourists than Rome → often quiet and peaceful, especially early morning or late afternoon.

Stunning scale and engineering visible up close — climb the stairs, walk the corridors, and feel the acoustics.

Combined ticket includes access to the nearby El Jem Archaeological Museum (excellent collection of Roman mosaics).

How to Get There

El Jem is located in central-eastern Tunisia, roughly halfway between Sousse and Sfax.

From Sousse (most popular & easiest): Train: Direct trains several times a day (≈1h 10–1h 30 min). Comfortable, cheap (around 8–12 TND), and the station is only a 10–15 minute walk to the amphitheatre. Louage (shared taxi): Frequent departures from Sousse louage station → very affordable and fast (≈1 hour).

From Tunis: Train: Tunis → El Jem (≈2h 30min–3h). Possible as a long day trip if you take an early train. Private driver / organized tour: More comfortable for a day trip (many agencies in Tunis, Hammamet, Sousse offer El Jem + other sites).

From Hammamet or Monastir: Usually via private transfer (≈2–2.5 hours) or combination: train/bus to Sousse → then to El Jem.

From Sfax: Train or louage (≈1 hour).

Tip: Train is generally the most scenic and stress-free option from coastal resorts.

Opening Hours & Tickets

Summer (May–September): ≈7:30/8:00 – 19:00; Winter (October–April): ≈8:00 – 17:00/17:30; Ramadan: Shorter hours (often until ≈17:00); Entrance fee (non-resident): ≈12 TND (≈3.8–4 USD) — includes amphitheatre + museum.

Some reports say card payments now accepted at the ticket office.

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for a relaxed visit (longer if you love photography or history).

What to See & Do

The Arena & Underground Passages: Walk onto the huge oval arena floor. Descend into the hypogeum (tunnels and animal cages beneath the arena) — very evocative.

Seating tiers & galleries: Climb different levels for panoramic views. Explore the vaulted corridors — excellent acoustics (try shouting or clapping).

El Jem Archaeological Museum (≈700 m walk, included in ticket): Outstanding Roman mosaics from nearby villas. Small but high-quality collection — don’t skip it.

Sunset or golden hour photography: The warm light on the sandstone is magical in late afternoon.

International Festival of Symphonic Music (if timing matches): Held inside the amphitheatre every summer (usually July) — unique experience.

Best Time to Visit

Ideal months: April–May and October–early November (pleasant 20–28°C / 68–82°F, fewer people).

Avoid: Peak summer midday (July–August can exceed 35–40°C / 95–104°F — very hot in the open stone structure).

Best time of day: Early morning (fewer people, cooler) or late afternoon (beautiful light).

Practical Tips

What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (very exposed site). Comfortable closed shoes (uneven stones, lots of stairs). Water bottle — limited shade and few vendors inside. Small daypack (security check at entrance).

Dress code: Modest clothing recommended (shoulders and knees covered) out of respect for local culture.

Guides: Official guides available at the entrance (negotiate price, usually 20–40 TND for 1 hour). Self-guided is fine if you read a bit beforehand.

Food & drink: Limited options inside → eat in town (simple cafés around the site) or bring snacks.

Safety & crowds: Generally very safe and quiet compared to European sites. Petty theft is rare, but keep valuables close.

Combine with: Sousse medina (1 h away), Kairouan (great mosques, ≈1 h), or Mahdia (coastal town, ≈45 min).

Final Thoughts

The El Jem Amphitheatre offers one of the most atmospheric and least commercialized Roman experiences you can have today. You can wander freely through massive corridors, stand in the middle of an ancient arena, and imagine 35,000 voices roaring — all without long queues or heavy restrictions. It’s a powerful reminder of Rome’s reach into North Africa and remains one of Tunisia’s absolute must-see historical sites.

If you’re already visiting the Tunisian coast, El Jem is an easy and highly rewarding day trip. Go early, take your time, and let the sheer scale of this 1,800-year-old wonder sink in.

Safe travels!

A Travel Guide to Sidi Bou Said (2026)

Sidi Bou Said is one of the most photogenic and enchanting villages in North Africa. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea just 20 km northeast of Tunis, this tiny blue-and-white village is famous for its distinctive Andalusian-style architecture, bougainvillea-draped walls, cobblestone lanes, and breathtaking sea views. Often called the “Santorini of Tunisia” or “the pearl of the Mediterranean,” it’s an ideal day trip from Tunis or a relaxing base for exploring the northern coast.

Why Visit Sidi Bou Said?

The village’s signature whitewashed buildings with bright cobalt-blue doors, windows, and shutters create an instantly recognizable and Instagram-worthy aesthetic. Beyond the beauty, it offers a relaxed bohemian atmosphere, excellent cafés with panoramic terraces, artisan shops, and a rich artistic heritage (it has long attracted painters, writers, and musicians).

How to Get There

From Tunis city center (most common starting point):

Train (TGM – Tunis–Goulette–Marsala line): The easiest and cheapest option. Take the light metro/train from Tunis Marine station to Sidi Bou Said station (about 40–50 minutes, ~2–3 TND / ~$0.6–1 USD one way). Trains run frequently.

Taxi / Uber / Bolt: 30–45 minutes depending on traffic; expect 30–50 TND (~$10–16 USD) one way.

Louage (shared taxi): From Tunis Bab Saadoun or other louage stations to La Marsa, then a short taxi to Sidi Bou Said.

From Tunis-Carthage Airport (TUN): About 30–40 minutes by taxi (~40–60 TND).

By car: Easy drive via the coastal road; parking is available but limited in the village center (arrive early).

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) → Ideal weather (20–28°C / 68–82°F), fewer crowds, lower hotel prices, and beautiful bougainvillea in bloom.

Summer (June–August) → Very popular, hot (often 30–35°C+), and crowded. Great for beach time but expect higher prices.

Winter (December–February) → Mild (12–18°C), quiet, but occasional rain and cooler sea breezes.

Avoid peak July–August weekends if you dislike crowds.

Safety: Generally very safe for tourists. Standard precautions apply (watch belongings in crowded spots).

A Travel Guide to the Archaeological Site of Carthage (2026)

The Archaeological Site of Carthage is one of North Africa’s most important ancient ruins and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. Founded by the Phoenicians around the 9th century BC, Carthage became a powerful maritime empire before its dramatic destruction by Rome in 146 BC during the Third Punic War. Rebuilt as a Roman colony, it flourished again as one of the empire’s wealthiest cities. Today, the sprawling site offers a fascinating blend of Punic, Roman, Byzantine, and early Christian remains scattered across modern Carthage, a upscale suburb about 15–20 km northeast of Tunis.

Why Visit Carthage?

Carthage is not a single compact ruin but a collection of about 10 major sites spread over several kilometers. Highlights include massive Roman baths overlooking the Mediterranean, ancient harbors that powered a legendary navy, dramatic hilltop views, and poignant sanctuaries. Combined with nearby Sidi Bou Said’s blue-and-white charm, it’s an ideal half-day or full-day trip from Tunis.

How to Get There

From Tunis: The easiest way is by Tunis suburban train (TGM line) from Tunis Marine station to Carthage Hannibal or Carthage Dermech stations (about 30–40 minutes, cheap fare ~1–2 TND). From the station, sites are walkable or a short taxi ride away.

By Taxi / Ride-Hailing: Use Bolt, Yassir, or a yellow taxi from central Tunis (20–30 minutes, ~15–25 TND one way).

Organized Tours: Many day trips from Tunis include Carthage + Sidi Bou Said (often with a guide).

Airport Access: Tunis-Carthage International Airport is very close—about 10–15 minutes by taxi.

Best Time to Visit

Season: Spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for mild weather (20–28°C / 68–82°F) and fewer crowds. Summers can be very hot (over 35°C / 95°F), winters cooler and occasionally rainy.

Time of Day: Start early (8–9 AM) to avoid heat and tour groups. Late afternoon offers beautiful golden light, especially at the baths by the sea.

Opening Hours & Tickets

Most sites open daily from approximately 8:00/8:30 AM to 5:00/5:30 PM (hours may extend slightly in summer and shorten in winter).

Combined Ticket: Buy a single ticket (~12 TND / about US$4) that grants access to nearly all major sites (Antonine Baths, Byrsa Hill & Museum, Amphitheatre, Theatre, Villas, etc.). Individual tickets are sometimes available but less economical.

The ticket is valid for one day; keep it handy as you’ll show it multiple times.

Top Attractions & What to See

The sites are spread out—plan to walk 4–6 km or use short taxi hops. A logical route often starts at Byrsa Hill and heads downhill toward the sea.

Byrsa Hill & Carthage National Museum: The acropolis of ancient Carthage offers panoramic views over the Gulf of Tunis. The museum displays outstanding Punic and Roman artifacts, including sarcophagi, mosaics, and statues.

Antonine Baths (Thermes d’Antonin): One of the largest Roman bath complexes outside Rome, right on the Mediterranean with impressive columns, pools, and hypocaust heating systems. The seafront location is stunning.

Punic Ports (Circular & Rectangular Harbors): The famous military and commercial harbors of Punic Carthage. The circular admiralty harbor (with reconstructed model) is especially evocative of Carthage’s naval power.

Tophet / Sanctuary of Salammbô: A controversial Punic sacred precinct with stelae possibly linked to child sacrifice rituals (debated among scholars). A somber but historically significant site.

Roman Amphitheatre & Theatre: The amphitheatre (smaller than Rome’s Colosseum but still impressive) and the nearby Roman theatre with sea views.

Roman Villas & Other Remains: Scattered luxury villas with beautiful floor mosaics (some still in place).

The museum houses incredible mosaics from the area.

Practical Tips

Walking & Comfort: Wear comfortable shoes—the terrain is uneven with lots of walking in sun-exposed areas. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat.

Guides: A licensed guide (~50–80 TND for 2–3 hours) greatly enhances understanding of the history. English-speaking guides are available.

Combine with Sidi Bou Said: Most visitors pair Carthage with the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said (just 2–3 km away) for blue doors, white houses, and cafés with sea views.

Food & Drink: Limited options on-site; eat in nearby La Goulette (seafood) or Sidi Bou Said.

Respect Rules: No touching ancient structures; photography is allowed but drones are restricted.

Final Thoughts

Carthage offers a powerful journey through Phoenician ambition, Roman grandeur, and the echoes of ancient conflicts. With its combination of dramatic ruins, sea views, and world-class museum artifacts, it’s one of the Mediterranean’s most rewarding archaeological experiences.

Allow at least 4–6 hours for a thorough visit, or join a half-day tour for convenience. Step into history where Hannibal once planned his campaigns and Roman emperors bathed in luxury—Carthage awaits.

Safe travels!

Dougga (also known as Thugga) is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved and most beautiful Roman archaeological sites in North Africa — and arguably the finest Roman ruins anywhere outside Italy. Located in northern Tunisia about 110 km southwest of Tunis, this UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 1997) offers remarkably intact monuments spread across a scenic hillside overlooking rolling countryside. With far fewer crowds than sites like Carthage or El Jem, Dougga provides an atmospheric, almost private experience of ancient Roman life in a provincial town.

Why Visit Dougga?

Dougga stands out for its exceptional state of preservation and the harmonious blend of Punic, Numidian, Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic layers. Key highlights include a near-perfect Roman theater, an imposing Capitol temple, a unique Libyco-Punic mausoleum (one of the oldest structures), and numerous temples, baths, houses, and public buildings — all set in a peaceful rural landscape.

How to Get There

Dougga is a popular day trip from Tunis, though public transport requires some patience.

From Tunis (recommended day trip):

Private driver / organized tour — Most convenient and popular. Many agencies offer full-day trips combining Dougga + Bulla Regia (another excellent Roman site nearby). Prices typically range from 150–300 TND (~$50–100 USD) depending on group size and inclusions. Book via GetYourGuide, Viator, or local hotels.

Louage (shared taxi) → From Bab Saadoun louage station in Tunis to Teboursouk or Nouvelle Dougga (≈15 TND one way, 1.5–2 hours). From Teboursouk, take a taxi or louage the last 10 km to the site (≈10–25 TND round trip; drivers often wait).

Bus → From Gare Routière Nord (Tunis) to Teboursouk (several daily departures, ≈10–15 TND, 2–2.5 hours). Then taxi to site.

Driving → Rent a car in Tunis (≈3 hours via good highways). Parking is available at the site entrance.

From other cities → Possible from Béja (closer) or Le Kef, but Tunis remains the main base.

Opening Hours & Entrance Fee

Hours: Usually 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM in summer (April–September); 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM in winter. Last entry ≈1 hour before closing.

Entrance fee: Around 12–15 TND for foreigners (≈$4–5 USD); often includes a small site map. Cash only in most cases.

Guided tours: Highly recommended. Official guides wait at the entrance (≈50–100 TND for 2–3 hours, negotiable; English/French usually available).

Best Time to Visit

Ideal seasons: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) — mild temperatures (20–28°C / 68–82°F), green hills, and comfortable walking.

Avoid: Mid-summer (June–August) midday heat (can exceed 35–40°C / 95–104°F) with almost no shade.

Tip: Arrive early (right at opening) to enjoy cooler air, better light for photos, and fewer people.

What to See – Must-visit Highlights

Roman Theater (≈168 AD): One of the best-preserved theaters in the Roman world — 19 tiers of seats (originally held ≈3,500 spectators), stage building with columns still standing. Climb to the top rows for panoramic views.

Capitol Temple: The iconic symbol of Dougga — a beautifully proportioned temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva (≈166 AD). Six towering Corinthian columns dominate the skyline.

Libyco-Punic Mausoleum (≈3rd–2nd century BC): The oldest and tallest Punic monument in existence (21 m high), with bilingual Libyan and Punic inscriptions — a rare pre-Roman survival.

Temple of Saturn & Temple of Juno Caelestis: Striking hilltop sanctuaries with atmospheric settings and fine views.

Trifolium House & wealthy Roman villas: Well-preserved mosaics and floor plans showing luxurious private life.

Forum, Market, Baths & Cisterns: Classical Roman civic center with arches, columns, and water systems.

Byzantine Fort & Church: Later layers showing the site’s continued use into the 6th–7th centuries.

Allow 3–4 hours to explore comfortably (longer if you love ruins).

Practical Tips

What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, sturdy walking shoes (uneven ground, steps). Plenty of water (only one small shop/café near entrance sells drinks/snacks). Camera (golden-hour light is magical).

Shade & comfort → Very little shade — bring an umbrella or visit early/late.

Combine visits → Dougga + Bulla Regia (≈40 km away) makes an excellent full-day itinerary (Bulla Regia famous for its unique underground villas).

Safety & etiquette → Site is safe and quiet. Respect signs, do not climb fragile structures.

Accessibility → Mostly uneven paths and steps — not wheelchair-friendly.

Where to Stay

Dougga itself has no accommodations — most visitors do a day trip from Tunis.

Tunis — Wide range of hotels (Medina area for atmosphere or Lac 1/La Marsa for comfort).

Nearby options — Small guesthouses in Teboursouk or Testour (charming Andalusian-style town ≈30 min away) for a more rural stay.

Dougga is a highlight of any Tunisia itinerary — a peaceful, evocative window into Roman North Africa that feels far less commercialized than many famous ancient sites. Plan for an early start, good shoes, and plenty of water — the reward is wandering among remarkably intact ruins in stunning countryside solitude. Safe travels!
