Gulf State Park Travel Guide (2026)

Gulf State Park protects more than 3.5 miles of white-sand beach on the Gulf of Mexico at Gulf Shores, backed by a 900-acre freshwater lake, dunes, a fishing and education pier, and miles of trails through restored coastal habitat. It is Alabama’s complete beach-and-coast destination on the state’s only ocean shoreline, with camping, paddling, biking, and wildlife viewing built around the beach. Its most irreplaceable experience is the stretch of undeveloped beach itself — protected dunes and shoreline where the Gulf meets one of Alabama’s most complete coastal parks.

Why It Is Worth Visiting

The park combines Alabama’s Gulf-front beach with a full recreation package. The beach runs more than 3.5 miles of white sand, accessible from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach access points with parking and amenities. Behind the beach, Lake Shelby’s 900 acres of freshwater open to kayaking, canoeing, and swimming, and the Backcountry Trail network offers miles of biking and hiking through restored coastal habitat. The park’s fishing and education pier extends into the Gulf, and the nature center and interpretive programming explain the coastal environment. Overnight visitors have a 496-site campground, cabins, and the Lodge at Gulf State Park, so the park works as both a day trip and a base for a coast stay.

DananaGo’s read is that Gulf State Park’s value is the range: the beach is the draw, but the park turns a beach day into a coast day, with lake, trails, and pier adding depth that a bare beach cannot.

DananaGo’s verdict: This is a Primary Attraction (state-level recommendation) — an Alabama A-grade priority, and the site a first-time visitor to the state’s coast should reserve time for. The reasons are concrete: it is Alabama’s only ocean shoreline and its most complete beach-and-coast destination, the beach is protected and walkable, and the lake and trails make it more than a sun-and-sand stop. It suits beach travelers, families, campers, and cyclists and birders. A reasonable stay is a full day or an overnight; the beach alone can fill half a day, and the trails, lake, and pier stretch it into a multi-day base. Travelers seeking only a quick sunbath can use the beach access points; for the full coast experience, this is the essential park.

What to Experience

The Gulf Beach

The park’s 3.5+ miles of white-sand beach are the reason to come. Access points at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offer parking, restrooms, and seasonal food, and the protected dunes keep the shoreline open. Walk the beach early or late for the quietest stretches, and use the beach flags to read water conditions.

Lake Shelby and the Trails

Behind the beach, Lake Shelby’s 900-acre freshwater lake opens to kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, and the Backcountry Trail network offers miles of biking and hiking through restored coastal habitat. For non-beach time, the lake and trails are the park’s second act.

The Fishing and Education Pier

The park’s pier extends into the Gulf and doubles as an education platform, with fishing access and interpretive programming. It is the place to see the coast’s marine life up close and a good afternoon addition to a beach day.

Plan Your Visit

Address

20115 State Park Road, Gulf Shores, AL 36542

Recommended time

A full day for beach, lake, and trails; an overnight to make the park a coast base

Hours

Trails and picnic areas open sunrise to sunset; beach access points follow daylight hours; headquarters offices 8 am–4 pm weekdays

Admission

Day-use parking $15 per personal vehicle at beach access points; beach access itself is free to pedestrians; camping and lodging are separate

Best time

Spring and fall for milder weather; summer for the full beach season; early morning and sunset for the quietest beach

Getting there

On the Gulf at Gulf Shores, off Highway 59; the park spans Gulf Shores and Orange Beach with multiple beach access points

Check the official website for current opening hours, admission prices, reservations, and key visitor policies.

A Focused Visit Route

Start at the main Gulf Shores beach access near the Beach Pavilion, walk the beach along the dunes, and stop at the fishing and education pier to see the coast from the water’s edge. Move inland to Lake Shelby for paddling or a lakeside walk, and take the Backcountry Trail for a bike or hike through the coastal habitat. If you are staying overnight, the loop expands into a full day: beach morning, lake and trails afternoon, pier at sunset.

Pay for parking at the beach access points ($15/day) rather than hunting for free beachfront parking; the park’s lot keeps the shoreline protected.

Check the beach flags before entering the water; rip currents are real on the Gulf coast.

Bring a bike for the Backcountry Trail — it is the park’s best non-beach asset.

Go early morning or at sunset for the quietest, most dramatic stretches of beach.

Experience It Online

A future DananaGo cloud experience will let you preview the beach, the pier, and the lake-and-trail side of the park before your visit, so you know how to divide your coast day.

Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument Travel Guide (2026)

Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument preserves the downtown places where the 1963 campaign against segregation — known as Project C — actually happened: the A.G. Gaston Motel, which served as the movement’s headquarters, Kelly Ingram Park, where police dogs and fire hoses met peaceful marchers, and the surrounding district anchored by 16th Street Baptist Church. The images of that spring — snarling police dogs, high-pressure hoses, and later the bombing of the church — reached print and television audiences around the world and helped force passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Established in 2017, the monument covers roughly four city blocks, so the most irreplaceable experience here is simply walking the ground where the history was made.

Why It Is Worth Visiting

In April and May of 1963, leaders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., took up residence at the A.G. Gaston Motel to direct Project C — a campaign of sit-ins, boycotts, marches, and mass arrests aimed at ending segregation in a city the movement called the most thoroughly segregated in the United States. When adult marchers filled the jails, the movement called on Birmingham’s children. On May 2 and 3, 1963, hundreds of student picketers were arrested in and around Kelly Ingram Park, and police met them with dogs and fire hoses. The photographs and film that resulted sickened the nation, including President John F. Kennedy, and raised civil rights from a regional issue to a national one. On September 15, 1963, a bomb at 16th Street Baptist Church killed four girls preparing for Sunday school; the church became a galvanizing symbol for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

DananaGo’s read is that the value here is place, not display: no museum diorama reproduces standing on the pavement where the Children’s March was met by dogs and hoses. The monument is also a work in progress — the park and streets are open now, while parts of the motel interior are being restored — so the visit is a walk through living history rather than a finished exhibit.

DananaGo’s verdict: This is a Primary Attraction — the city’s A-grade priority, and the site a first-time Birmingham visitor should reserve time for before any other museum or neighborhood. The reasons are concrete: it is the only place where the defining events of the 1963 campaign can be visited on their original ground, it is free, and the four-block district can be walked comfortably in a couple of hours. It suits American-history travelers, families and school-age visitors learning the Civil Rights Movement for the first time, and anyone who wants to understand Birmingham’s national importance. A reasonable stay is 2–3 hours for the outdoor sites and the visitor center, or a half day if you add a guided tour of 16th Street Baptist Church or the adjacent museum. Travelers with no interest in American history can skip it, but for a one-day Birmingham itinerary, this is the place to start.

What to Experience

Kelly Ingram Park

The park was the assembly point and battleground of the 1963 campaign. Children’s March marchers gathered here on May 2–3, 1963, before being met with police dogs, fire hoses, and mass arrests. Today the park’s four corners hold sculpture: the Four Spirits monument to the four girls killed in the church bombing, and statues showing a boy seized by a police officer while a dog lunges — a re-creation of the photograph that became the symbol of the unrest. Walk the short loop, read the interpretive panels, and follow the cell-phone tour to hear the story at each stop.

16th Street Baptist Church

The church sits across from the park and anchors the district’s history. On September 15, 1963, at 10:22 a.m., a bomb exploded here as children prepared for Sunday school, killing four girls and injuring more than 20 people; the crime forced the nation’s conscience and became a touchstone for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The congregation still worships here. Guided tours run Tuesday through Saturday by reservation, cost $10 for adults and $5 for students 18 and under, and take about an hour. Book through the 16th Street Baptist Church tours page in advance, as availability changes with church activities.

A.G. Gaston Motel

Built in 1954 by businessman A.G. Gaston to give African American travelers first-class lodging and dining in segregated Birmingham, the motel became the campaign’s nerve center in the spring of 1963. King, Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, and other leaders gathered in Room 30 — the “War Room” — to plan strategy, and held press conferences in the courtyard. The 1954 wing of the motel is currently closed for restoration, so visitors can see the restored exterior and the motel’s 1968 wing coffee shop and exhibit space, which remain open during construction. Check the visitor center for the latest access to the interior as restoration continues.

Plan Your Visit

Address

A.G. Gaston Motel (visitor center), 1510 5th Avenue N, Birmingham, AL 35203; the monument district spans roughly four downtown blocks between 15th–17th Streets and 5th–6th Avenues N

Recommended time

2–3 hours for the outdoor sites and visitor center; a half day with the church tour or adjacent museum

Hours

Kelly Ingram Park open daily 8 am–8 pm; visitor center hours vary while the motel’s 1954 wing is being restored — confirm before you go

Admission

Free; no entrance fee or pass required. 16th Street Baptist Church tours: $10 adults, $5 students 18 and under

Best time

Weekday mornings for quieter streets; spring and fall for mild weather, since most of the experience is outdoors

Getting there

The district is in downtown Birmingham, walkable from the city center; by car, take I-65 exit 260B and follow 5th Avenue N; street parking and nearby lots serve the area

Check the official website for current opening hours, admission prices, reservations, and key visitor policies.

A Focused Visit Route

Start at Kelly Ingram Park, at the corner of 5th Avenue N and 16th Street. Walk the sculpture loop with the interpretive panels, roughly 30–45 minutes. Cross 6th Avenue N to 16th Street Baptist Church for your reserved tour (allow one hour). Then walk back toward 5th Avenue N to the A.G. Gaston Motel to see the restored exterior and the exhibit space in the 1968 wing, ending at the visitor center. The whole loop covers about four blocks and can be done in a morning or afternoon. If you have time, continue a few steps to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute museum for exhibits that place the outdoor sites in the full national context.

DananaGo Tips

Check the visitor center’s current hours before your visit — the motel’s 1954 wing is closed for restoration, and most of the experience is outdoors.

Book the 16th Street Baptist Church tour in advance; it runs Tuesday through Saturday by reservation and closes for church events.

Park once and walk. The sites are four blocks apart, and street parking is limited.

Go early on a weekday in spring or fall to have the park’s sculptures and panels to yourself.

Experience It Online

A future DananaGo cloud experience will let you walk the district’s key sites — the park’s sculpture corners, the church facade, and the motel exterior — before you arrive, so the ground feels familiar when you step onto it.

U.S. Space & Rocket Center Travel Guide (2026)

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville is the official visitor center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and a Smithsonian Affiliate, housing one of the world’s largest collections of rockets and space artifacts. The museum’s centerpiece is the Saturn V Hall, built around a real Saturn V moon rocket, and the grounds hold Rocket Park, Shuttle Park, the Military Park, and a working planetarium. The same campus is home to Space Camp, where trainees prepare for simulated missions. Its most irreplaceable experience is standing under a genuine Saturn V — the largest rocket ever flown — indoors, in the same building that trained generations of space professionals.

Why It Is Worth Visiting

The center brings spaceflight to life in one place. The Saturn V Hall displays a real Saturn V, the rocket that carried Apollo missions to the moon, suspended in an indoor gallery built around it. Around the museum, Rocket Park and Shuttle Park hold launch vehicles and orbiters, and the INTUITIVE Planetarium adds a modern show. The center is also the home of Space Camp, where trainees of all ages train for simulated space missions, which connects the museum’s history to a hands-on future. As the official visitor center for Marshall Space Flight Center, it carries a real NASA relationship rather than a theme-park imitation, and it is the most complete science-and-technology destination in Alabama.

DananaGo’s read is that the center succeeds by combining artifact and activity: you see the machines that went to space, then you can experience simulators and camp-style training that make the work of an astronaut concrete.

DananaGo’s verdict: This is a Primary Attraction (state-level recommendation) — an Alabama A-grade priority, and the site a first-time visitor to the state should consider reserving time for. The reasons are concrete: it is the state’s most complete science-and-technology destination, it holds a genuine Saturn V under cover, and it pairs a world-class collection with hands-on Space Camp training. It suits families, science and engineering travelers, and anyone fascinated by spaceflight. A reasonable stay is 3–4 hours for the museum, or longer for a full day with simulators and Space Camp programming. Travelers with no interest in space can skip it, but for the state’s science-and-technology experience, this is the essential stop.

What to Experience

The Saturn V Hall

The centerpiece of the visit: a real Saturn V, the rocket that launched Apollo crews to the moon, displayed horizontally in the Davidson Center. The hall is built around the rocket, and standing beneath its 363 feet of machinery is the museum’s defining moment. Allow time to walk its full length.

Rocket Park and Shuttle Park

Outdoors, Rocket Park displays a collection of launch vehicles, and Shuttle Park holds orbiter hardware. The parks show the range of American rocketry, from early vehicles to the shuttle era, and connect the museum’s indoor artifacts to the larger story.

Space Camp and the Simulators

The center is the home of Space Camp, and the museum experience includes simulators that give visitors a taste of astronaut training. For many visitors this is the hands-on highlight — the difference between seeing spaceflight and feeling it.

Plan Your Visit

Address

One Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL 35805

Recommended time

3–4 hours for the museum; a full day with simulators and Space Camp programming

Hours

Museum hours vary by season (typically 9 am–5 pm); closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day

Admission

Adults 13+ $30; seniors (65+) and military $20; children 5–12 $20; under 5 free; parking free

Best time

Weekday mornings; check the calendar for special events and Space Camp sessions

Getting there

Adjacent to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, off I-565; free on-site parking

Check the official website for current opening hours, admission prices, reservations, and key visitor policies.

A Focused Visit Route

Start in the Saturn V Hall to see the museum’s centerpiece first, then move through the museum’s exhibits on the history of rocketry and the space program. Go outdoors to Rocket Park and Shuttle Park for the larger vehicles. Finish with the simulators or a planetarium show if your ticket includes them. If you have a full day, add a Space Camp-style activity; if you have only three hours, the Saturn V Hall and Rocket Park are the essentials.

DananaGo Tips

Start with the Saturn V Hall — it is the museum’s defining sight, and it deserves the first, freshest attention.

Check operating hours by season; the museum’s hours shift across the year.

Book planetarium shows and simulator slots in advance on busy days.

Allow extra time for the outdoor parks in good weather; they are the second half of the collection.

Experience It Online

A future DananaGo cloud experience will let you preview the Saturn V Hall, the rocket parks, and the simulators before your visit, so you know how to pace a day on campus.
