<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Travel Guide to Salonga National Park (2026)</strong></h2>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Salonga National Park is one of Africa&#8217;s most extraordinary and remote wilderness areas. As the continent&#8217;s largest tropical rainforest national park (covering approximately 36,000 km² — larger than Belgium), it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last truly intact lowland rainforests in the world. Located in the heart of the Congo Basin, south of the Congo River, the park is a biodiversity hotspot and home to around 40% of the world&#8217;s bonobos, along with many other rare and endemic species.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">This park offers a true expedition-style experience in pristine nature, but it is <strong>not a conventional tourist destination</strong>. Visiting requires significant planning, specialized operators, and awareness of serious challenges.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Visit Salonga National Park?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Unique Wildlife</strong>: The park protects an astonishing array of species, including bonobos (the flagship species), forest elephants, Congo peacocks, giant pangolins, leopards, golden-bellied mangabeys, Allen’s swamp mangabeys, black colobus monkeys, sitatunga, duikers, red river hogs, and numerous birds (over 300 species), reptiles, and fish.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Intact Rainforest</strong>: Nearly 95% forest cover with rivers, streams, marshlands, grassy bais (clearings), and wetlands — offering a glimpse of untouched Central African rainforest.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Conservation Focus</strong>: Tourism, when responsibly managed, supports anti-poaching efforts and local communities.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to Get There</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Salonga is extremely isolated with <strong>no road access</strong> inside the park. Entry is only possible by water or air.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>By River</strong>: The most common (and adventurous) route is via the Congo River and its tributaries (e.g., Salonga, Luilaka, Lomela, or Loile rivers). Expeditions often start from Kinshasa or Mbandaka, involving boat journeys that can take several days.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>By Air</strong>: Charter flights from Kinshasa or Mbandaka to small airstrips near the park (e.g., Monkoto, Anga, or Mundja), followed by boat or foot access.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Main Entry Points</strong>: The park has northern and southern sectors separated by a corridor. Most expeditions focus on one sector.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">All visits require special permits from the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Best Time to Visit</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">The park has an equatorial climate with high humidity and rainfall year-round.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Dry Seasons (Best)</strong>: June to August (main dry period) and December to February. These months offer better trail conditions, lower river levels (easier navigation), and improved wildlife visibility in bais and along rivers.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Avoid</strong>: March to May and September to November (heavy rains, flooding, muddy trails, and difficult access).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What to Do and See</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Activities are expedition-style and limited due to the park&#8217;s remoteness:</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Guided Nature Walks / Forest Treks</strong>: On foot with armed rangers/guides to spot wildlife, birds, butterflies, and plants.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Wildlife Viewing</strong>: Especially bonobos, forest elephants, and birds. Bais (grassy clearings) are good for observing animals.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Birdwatching</strong>: Over 300 species, including the rare Congo peafowl.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>River Exploration</strong>: By motorized canoe or boat to navigate waterways and observe aquatic life.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cultural / Community Interactions</strong>: Some expeditions include visits to nearby communities (with respect for local customs).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Note</strong>: Gorilla trekking does <strong>not</strong> occur here (that&#8217;s Virunga or Kahuzi-Biega). Swimming in rivers is risky due to wildlife and currents.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tour Operators and Practicalities</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Tourism is very limited and not mass-market. Only a few specialized operators run rare expeditions:</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Work with reputable companies experienced in DRC (e.g., those offering Congo River + Salonga combos, or conservation-focused tours).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Expect small groups, basic camping, and full logistical support (permits, armed rangers, boats, supplies).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Costs</strong>: Very high due to charters, permits, logistics, and security. Expect several thousand USD per person for multi-day expeditions.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What to Bring</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Lightweight, quick-dry clothing and rain gear</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Sturdy boots for muddy trails</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Insect repellent (strong DEET), malaria prophylaxis, and yellow fever vaccination certificate (required)</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">First-aid kit, water purification, headlamp</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Binoculars and camera (with protection from humidity)</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Cash (USD preferred), as ATMs are unreliable</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Salonga National Park is a rare and magnificent destination — one of the few places left where you can experience the Congo Basin&#8217;s rainforest in near-pristine condition. However, it is an expedition for highly experienced adventure travelers only, not a casual trip.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Due to ongoing security concerns, logistical challenges, and government travel warnings, most people will never visit Salonga. If you are seriously considering it, prioritize safety, use only trusted operators, and stay updated on conditions.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">For most travelers interested in DRC wildlife, more accessible (and currently safer) options include Virunga or Kahuzi-Biega National Parks (with their own risks and advisories).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Safe travels — and respect this fragile wilderness.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Kahuzi-Biega National Park Travel Guide (2026)</strong></h2>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Kahuzi-Biega National Park, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) near Bukavu in South Kivu Province, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa&#8217;s most important protected areas for biodiversity. Spanning over 6,000 square kilometers, the park features two extinct volcanoes—Mount Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Mount Biega—and transitions from montane forest to lowland rainforest. It is best known for hosting habituated eastern lowland gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri), a subspecies found nowhere else in the world.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">This park offers a quieter, more affordable, and less crowded alternative to mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda, with permits significantly cheaper and often fewer visitors per group.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Visit Kahuzi-Biega National Park?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Encounter <strong>eastern lowland gorillas</strong> in a pristine, less-touristed environment.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Experience diverse ecosystems: montane forests, bamboo zones, swamps, and lowland rainforest.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Observe over 130 bird species, chimpanzees, forest elephants, and other primates.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Support conservation in a critically important but under-visited protected area.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to Get There</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Most visitors access the park via <strong>Bukavu</strong>, the nearest major town on Lake Kivu.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>International Arrival:</strong> Fly into Kigali International Airport (Rwanda) — the most common entry point. Drive or fly to the border at Cyangugu/Goma → Rusizi border crossing → Bukavu (about 4–6 hours by road from Kigali via Nyungwe Forest).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Alternative Routes:</strong> Fly to Goma (DRC) and drive to Bukavu (longer and more challenging road). Domestic flights within DRC are limited and unreliable.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">From Bukavu, the park headquarters and gorilla trekking starting points are about 30–60 minutes by vehicle.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Best Time to Visit</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Dry seasons:</strong> June–September and December–February — trails are drier, easier trekking, fewer leeches.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Wet seasons:</strong> March–May and October–November — lusher vegetation, but muddier trails and discounted permits in some cases.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Gorilla trekking is possible year-round.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Main Activities</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking (the highlight)</strong>: Track one of the habituated gorilla families (fewer groups than in Rwanda/Uganda). Spend one magical hour observing the gorillas at close range. Trek duration: 1–6+ hours depending on where the group is located.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hiking &amp; Nature Walks</strong>: Summit Mount Kahuzi (challenging day hike with stunning views). Explore waterfalls, bamboo forests, and birding trails.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Birdwatching &amp; Primate Viewing</strong>: Spot endemic birds, chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and more.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Gorilla Trekking Permits &amp; Costs</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Permit cost</strong> — Approximately <strong>US$400</strong> per person for standard trekking (high season); sometimes discounted to <strong>US$200–350</strong> in low season (check current rates).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Permits are issued by ICCN and should be booked well in advance through a tour operator or directly via the park/ICCN contacts.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Much cheaper than Rwanda ($1,500) or Uganda ($800).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Limited daily slots — small groups ensure a more intimate experience.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to Book &amp; Tour Operators</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Gorilla trekking must be arranged through licensed operators. Reputable companies often coordinate permits, transport, accommodation, rangers, and security. Look for operators with recent positive reviews and experience in eastern DRC.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Where to Stay</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bukavu (most common base):</strong> Coco Lake Hotel or Orchid Safari Club — mid-range with lake views. Bethanie Guest House or similar — budget options.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Near the park:</strong> Basic lodges or campsites (e.g., Kahuzi Biega Safari Lodge or similar). Expect simple but comfortable accommodation — power outages and limited amenities are common.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What to Bring / Packing Tips</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, sturdy waterproof hiking boots.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Rain jacket/poncho, hat, gloves, gaiters (for leeches/mud).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Insect repellent (DEET), sunscreen, personal first-aid kit.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Binoculars, camera (no flash), waterproof bag.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Passport, yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for DRC entry).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Cash in USD (small bills) — credit cards rarely accepted.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Gorilla Trekking Rules &amp; Etiquette</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Minimum age usually 15 years.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Keep 7–10 meters distance from gorillas.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">No flash photography, loud noises, or sudden movements.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Stay in a tight group, follow your guide/rangers.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Do not eat or leave food near gorillas.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Cough/sneeze into your elbow if needed.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Bring a face mask if required (post-COVID protocols may apply).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Kahuzi-Biega offers one of the most authentic and affordable gorilla experiences in Africa, with the chance to see eastern lowland gorillas in a dramatically beautiful setting. However, this is not a conventional safari destination — it requires thorough planning, flexibility, and awareness of regional realities.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re an experienced traveler seeking a unique, off-the-beaten-path adventure and are prepared for the challenges, Kahuzi-Biega can be profoundly rewarding. Always prioritize current security information and travel with a trusted operator.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Safe travels and enjoy the magic of the eastern lowland gorillas!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Travel Guide to Virunga National Park (2026)</strong></h2>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Virunga National Park, Africa&#8217;s oldest national park (established in 1925), is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the planet&#8217;s most biodiverse places. Located in eastern DRC near the borders with Rwanda and Uganda, it stretches from the Rwenzori Mountains to Lake Edward and is home to mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, lions, hippos, and the active <strong>Mount Nyiragongo</strong> volcano with its stunning lava lake. Despite its incredible wildlife and landscapes, Virunga is in a conflict-affected region, making travel highly specialized and not suitable for casual visitors.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Visit Virunga?</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">One of only a few places in the world to see <strong>mountain gorillas</strong> in the wild (cheaper permits than Rwanda/Uganda when open).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Summit <strong>Mount Nyiragongo</strong>, one of the few volcanoes with a persistent lava lake.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Extremely biodiverse: savannas, rainforests, alpine zones, and wetlands.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Your visit directly supports rangers who protect wildlife and combat poaching (the park has lost over 200 rangers in the past decades).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to Get There (When Open)</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Most visitors arrive via <strong>Rwanda</strong> (safer and more stable):</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Fly into <strong>Kigali International Airport</strong> (Rwanda).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Drive to <strong>Goma</strong> (DRC) — about 5–7 hours via the Gisenyi–Goma border crossing (official tourist convoys often used).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">From Goma, the park arranges all internal transport for safety.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Alternative routes via Uganda exist but are less common.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Main Activities (When Available)</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Mountain Gorilla Trekking</strong>: Track habituated gorilla families in the Mikeno sector. Permit cost (historical): $400–$450 USD (much cheaper than Rwanda&#8217;s $1,500 or Uganda&#8217;s $800). Max 8 people per group; 1 hour with the gorillas after tracking (can take 1–6 hours). Age minimum: usually 15+. Always escorted by armed rangers.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Mount Nyiragongo Volcano Trek</strong>: Overnight hike to the summit (11,384 ft / 3,470 m). View the world&#8217;s largest lava lake from basic shelters. Duration: 5–6 hours up, overnight, then descent. Physically demanding; requires good fitness.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Other Experiences</strong>: Chimpanzee tracking (when available). Visit Senkwekwe Center (gorilla orphanage). Boat trips on Lake Edward (hippos &amp; birds). Stays at luxury lodges like Mikeno Lodge or Kibumba Tented Camp.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Where to Stay</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Mikeno Lodge</strong> — luxury, near gorilla sector.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Kibumba Tented Camp</strong> — starting point for many treks.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Tchegera Island</strong> — serene Lake Kivu getaway.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">All bookings go through the official Virunga site.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Practical Tips</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Book everything in advance</strong> through the official website (visit.virunga.org).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Travel only with <strong>official park arrangements</strong> — no independent travel inside the park.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Health</strong> — Yellow fever vaccination required; malaria prophylaxis strongly recommended; bring water purification.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Packing</strong> — Good hiking boots, rain gear, layers (altitude changes), insect repellent, binoculars, no drones.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Photography</strong> — Flash forbidden near gorillas; keep respectful distance (7 meters).</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Best time</strong> — Dry seasons (June–September, December–February) for easier trekking.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></h3>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Virunga National Park offers one of the most raw, rewarding, and meaningful wildlife experiences in Africa — but it is <strong>not</strong> a conventional safari destination. Tourism supports critical conservation and ranger protection efforts in a challenging environment.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">If and when Virunga reopens fully, it remains a powerful place to witness nature&#8217;s beauty and support one of the world&#8217;s most dedicated conservation teams.</p>

<p class="has-gradient-1-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph">Safe travels — and hope for peace in the region.</p>
