National Constitution Center Travel Guide (2026)

The National Constitution Center is America’s museum dedicated to the U.S. Constitution. Interactive galleries, rare documents, live interpretation, civic debate, and life-size figures in Signers’ Hall examine not only how the Constitution was created, but how its promises, structures, amendments, and disagreements continue to shape public life.

PRIMARY EXPERIENCE

American History

SECONDARY EXPERIENCES

Hands-on Learning · Historic Sites

Why It Is Worth Visiting

Unlike a monument that presents a finished national story, the Center focuses on argument: how power should be divided, who belongs within “We the People,” how rights are interpreted, and how constitutional change occurs. Its nonpartisan educational approach places competing ideas, primary documents, artifacts, and visitor decisions side by side.

DananaGo’s verdict: this is a map-level Philadelphia attraction because it completes the Independence Mall experience. Independence Hall shows where the Constitution was debated; this museum helps visitors understand what the document says, how it changed, and why Americans still disagree about it. Allow two to three hours.

What to Experience

America’s Founding

Follow the story from colonial conflict through revolution, the Constitutional Convention, ratification, and the Bill of Rights. Rare artifacts and digital interactives make the founding generation’s unresolved debates over liberty, equality, consent, representation, and federal power visible.

Governing the Nation

This 2026 permanent gallery explains checks and balances, the three branches, federalism, and moments when constitutional structures were tested. Use the interactives to connect an abstract diagram of government to decisions, elections, court cases, and political conflict.

Signers’ Hall

Walk among 42 life-size bronze figures representing the delegates present on the final day of the Constitutional Convention—both those who signed and those who refused. The room works best after the founding galleries, when individual positions and compromises have context.

Rights, Amendments, and Reconstruction

Spend time with the First Amendment and Civil War and Reconstruction galleries. Together they show that constitutional history did not end in 1787: amendments, court decisions, political movements, war, and civic action repeatedly transformed the meaning of citizenship and freedom.

Plan Your Visit

Address

525 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

Recommended time

2–3 hours; add time for scheduled programs or close study of documents

Regular hours

Daily, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; confirm holiday and event changes

Admission

Timed museum tickets and group options vary; purchase through the official site

Best time

Weekday opening time, before larger school and tour groups arrive

Getting there

Walk from Independence Hall and Old City, SEPTA, Philly PHLASH, bike share, or nearby paid parking

Accessibility

Accessible building and programs; contact the Center for current services, sensory needs, ASL, tactile tours, and group accommodations

Before visiting, confirm the official hours, tickets, programs, and visitor information and review the current exhibits and experiences. Galleries, artifacts, live programs, and special events can change.

A Smart Two-and-a-Half-Hour Route

Begin with America’s Founding to establish the Revolution, Convention, ratification, and Bill of Rights.

Move to Governing the Nation and test how separated powers and federalism work.

Choose one rights-focused gallery and follow a constitutional issue across multiple eras.

Spend focused time in Civil War and Reconstruction to understand the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.

Enter Signers’ Hall last, identifying delegates whose choices you encountered earlier.

Finish with one question in the Interactive Constitution to continue the debate online.

DananaGo Tips

Visit after Independence Hall: the museum is more meaningful when the Convention rooms and geography are fresh.

Do not skip disagreement: compare arguments and dissent instead of looking only for familiar founders.

Use interactives selectively: complete a few decision-based experiences carefully rather than touching every screen.

Check the daily program: gallery talks, quizzes, theater, and civic programs can become the strongest part of the visit.

Leave time for Reconstruction: the post–Civil War amendments are essential, not an optional epilogue.

Experience It Online

The official Online Museum Experience offers 360-degree galleries, interactive maps, games, audio, documents, and exhibit stories. Pair it with the Interactive Constitution, which presents clause-by-clause explanations and areas of scholarly agreement and debate. Together they form one of the strongest cloud-travel and civic-learning resources in the Philadelphia collection.

Museum of the American Revolution Travel Guide (2026)

The Museum of the American Revolution turns the founding era into a human story rather than a list of dates. Its galleries connect original objects, immersive environments, films, and personal accounts—from the first protests through independence and the unfinished struggle over liberty—making it one of Philadelphia’s strongest introductions to the American Revolution.

SECONDARY EXPERIENCES

Historic Sites · Hands-on Learning

Why It Is Worth Visiting

The museum is especially valuable after—or before—walking through Independence National Historical Park. It explains why the Revolution happened, how ordinary people experienced it, and why its promises remained contested. The presentation includes women, Native peoples, free and enslaved people of African descent, soldiers, loyalists, and revolutionaries, creating a broader story than a monument-only visit can provide.

DananaGo’s verdict: this is a map-level Philadelphia attraction and the city’s best single museum for understanding the Revolution as a complete story. Allow about two to three hours; history-focused visitors may want longer.

What to Experience

The Road to Independence

Begin with the political and social tensions that pushed thirteen colonies toward rebellion. Period objects, printed material, reconstructed spaces, and multimedia help distinguish the uncertain choices people faced from the tidy sequence often presented in textbooks.

The Revolutionary War

The central galleries follow the conflict through military campaigns, shifting loyalties, hardships, and the experiences of civilians and soldiers. Hands-on elements and immersive settings make the scale and risk of the war understandable for visitors who arrive without specialist knowledge.

Washington’s War Tent

The museum’s signature object is George Washington’s surviving headquarters tent. It is revealed through a dedicated theater presentation that explains its preservation and its role as the mobile center of the Continental Army’s command. Treat the presentation as an essential part of the visit and check the day’s program schedule after arrival.

A New Nation—and an Unfinished Revolution

The final galleries examine the creation of a new political order and the gap between revolutionary ideals and lived reality. This section gives the museum its depth: independence becomes the beginning of continuing arguments over citizenship, freedom, equality, and national identity rather than a simple ending.

Plan Your Visit

Address

101 South Third Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

Recommended time

2–3 hours; allow 3–4 hours if you read exhibits closely

Regular hours

Daily, 9:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; closed on selected holidays and one annual maintenance date

Admission

Timed tickets are available online and at the museum. Adult, senior, student, military, youth, member, and access-program prices vary; children age 5 and under are free.

Best time

Arrive near opening on a weekday for quieter galleries and easier access to scheduled presentations

Getting there

Convenient from SEPTA’s Market–Frankford Line at 2nd or 5th Street, Center City bus routes, and the PATCO station at 8th and Market

Parking

The museum has no dedicated visitor lot; use a nearby public garage and check current directions before driving

Accessibility

The entrance and galleries are accessible; wheelchairs, elevators, sensory resources, audio description, and other accommodations are available

Before visiting, confirm the museum’s current hours and admission, daily programs, directions and parking, and accessibility information. Ticket prices, holiday closures, presentations, and special exhibitions can change.

A Smart Two-and-a-Half-Hour Route

Begin with the orientation film to establish the people, places, and timeline.

Move through the Road to Independence galleries without skipping the reconstructed environments.

Spend the largest share of your time in the war galleries and compare the perspectives of revolutionaries, loyalists, soldiers, and civilians.

See the Washington’s War Tent presentation when it is offered; plan the surrounding galleries around its start time.

Finish with the New Nation section and the continuing debate over liberty and citizenship.

Use the final interactive and reflection spaces to connect the eighteenth-century story with later generations.

If you have only 90 minutes, prioritize the orientation film, the main chronological galleries, Washington’s War Tent, and the final section on the Revolution’s continuing legacy.

DananaGo Tips

Check presentation times first: arrange your visit around Washington’s War Tent rather than discovering the schedule too late.

Visit in historical sequence: the galleries are designed as a connected narrative, so entering midway weakens the experience.

Pair it intelligently: combine the museum with Independence National Historical Park, but avoid rushing both into a short morning.

Use the voices in the galleries: personal testimony and objects reveal more complexity than the headline events alone.

Preview online: the official virtual tour helps families and history learners identify must-see sections before arrival.

Experience It Online

The museum’s official virtual tour is a strong cloud-travel experience in its own right. It combines 360-degree gallery panoramas, close views of selected objects, and guided audio so you can follow the exhibition remotely or preview the building before a physical visit.

Why It Is Worth Visiting

Founded in 1824, the Institute combines the legacy of Benjamin Franklin with a modern science-center approach built around touching, testing, climbing, observing, and asking questions. Its strongest experiences are not passive displays: visitors walk through a giant heart, fire a model neuron, experiment with physical forces, encounter historic engineering artifacts, and watch science demonstrations unfold in real time.

DananaGo’s verdict: this is a map-level Philadelphia attraction because it delivers a full half-day of participatory science for families, curious adults, and school-age travelers. It is most rewarding when visitors choose a few themes and explore them deeply instead of racing through every floor.

What to Experience

Body Odyssey and the Giant Heart

The Giant Heart has been a Philadelphia rite of passage since 1954. Now placed within Body Odyssey, it anchors a broader exploration of biological systems, health, medical technology, and the ways body systems work together. Walk the route of a blood cell, then spend time with the surrounding simulations instead of treating the Heart as a photo stop.

Your Brain

Fire a model neuron, test how the brain combines sensory information, explore visual and audio illusions, and—if appropriate for your group—climb the 18-foot neural network. This gallery is one of the museum’s best examples of turning complex biology into physical, memorable actions.

Historic Machines and Engineering

The Baldwin 60000 steam locomotive, aviation artifacts, and engineering collections connect hands-on science to Philadelphia’s industrial history. Look for the design decisions behind each machine: how force is transferred, how materials solve structural problems, and how inventors balanced power, control, and safety.

Fels Planetarium and Live Science

General admission includes scheduled planetarium programming and daily live science experiences, but times vary. Build the day around one planetarium show and one demonstration, then use the exhibits between them. The Benjamin Franklin National Memorial in the rotunda adds a quieter architectural and historical counterpoint.

Plan Your Visit

Address

222 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103

Recommended time

3–4 hours; allow longer for a special exhibition or multiple scheduled shows

Regular hours

Daily, 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; closed on selected major holidays

Admission

General admission covers three floors of hands-on exhibits, live science programs, and a Fels Planetarium show; special exhibitions cost more

Best time

Weekday opening time or later afternoon; school groups are often concentrated in the morning

Getting there

Walk from Center City, SEPTA bus, Philly PHLASH, rideshare, bike share, or the paid on-site garage at 271 North 21st Street

Accessibility

Accessible entrances and garage route, elevators, courtesy wheelchairs, seating, sensory backpacks and guide, PCA access, and advance ASL requests

Before visiting, confirm the official hours and visit information, ticket options and current special exhibition, and accessibility resources. Prices, show schedules, temporary closures, and special exhibitions can change.

A Smart Three-Hour Route

Check the daily schedule on arrival and reserve your route around one planetarium show and one live demonstration.

Begin with Body Odyssey and the Giant Heart before lines build.

Move to Your Brain and complete several experiments before attempting the neural climb.

Choose one engineering theme—train, flight, electricity, or motion—and investigate it in depth.

Attend the scheduled show or demonstration instead of trying to finish every nearby gallery.

End in the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial and review what your group found most surprising.

DananaGo Tips

Use the schedule first: showtimes are the fixed points; exhibits can fit around them.

Set a family meeting point: the museum is large, busy, and easy for groups to split up in.

Prepare for stimulation: sound, flashing lights, crowds, and climbing elements vary by gallery; consult the official sensory guide if useful.

Buy from the official site: the Institute warns that reseller tickets may be invalid or impossible to replace.

Leave room for curiosity: children often spend much longer at one interactive than adults expect; depth is better than floor-by-floor completion.

Experience It Online

The Institute’s official Spark of Science collection brings short demonstrations and at-home experiments online, covering subjects such as crystals, air pressure, lasers, electricity, sound, and chemistry. It cannot reproduce the scale of the museum, but it preserves the central experience: seeing a phenomenon, asking how it works, and trying a guided experiment.
