Cheomseongdae Observatory Travel Guide (2026)
Cheomseongdae (첨성대, “Star-Gazing Tower”) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Gyeongju, often called the “Museum Without Walls” due to its wealth of Silla Kingdom heritage. Built in the 7th century during the reign of Queen Seondeok (632–647 CE), it is the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia and a designated National Treasure No. 31. It forms part of the Gyeongju Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The elegant stone tower stands 9.17 meters tall with a base diameter of about 5.35 meters (tapering slightly at the top). Its design is rich in symbolism: approximately 365 granite stones represent the days in a year, 12 base stones symbolize the months, and the structure’s layers evoke lunar cycles. A square window midway up allows interior access, and from above, it resembles the Hanja character for “well” (井).
While you cannot enter or climb the tower, the surrounding park offers excellent views, especially when illuminated at night.

Taxis or rental bikes are convenient for exploring the historic area.
Many sites cluster together, so walking or using the Jewel Beetle Electric Car (a tourist shuttle) works well.
